Actively Participated in the recent Birth Defects Awareness Celebration

The Association of Ethiopian Pediatric Surgeons (AEPS) actively participated in the recent Birth Defects Awareness Celebration, making meaningful contributions toward advancing pediatric surgical care in Ethiopia.

As part of this national initiative, AEPS took part in a high-level ceremony hosted by the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), attended by the Deputy Minister of Health and widely covered by major media outlets. During the event, the Association played a pivotal role in raising awareness about pediatric surgical services and in defining the scope and importance of pediatric surgery practice in Ethiopia.

On the second day of the celebration, AEPS led a panel discussion focused on birth defects, fostering constructive dialogue among stakeholders and strengthening multidisciplinary collaboration.

In addition to its advocacy efforts, the Association successfully conducted a one-week surgical campaign across multiple centers. The campaign was implemented in two phases:
• March 3 to March 7
• March 9 to March 13 in Harar

The campaign was carried out at the following institutions:
• Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital
• Menelik II Referral Hospital
• St. Peter Referral Hospital
• Hiwot Fana Comprehensive Specialized University Hospital
• Werabe Comprehensive Specialized Hospital

Through this initiative, a total of 150 patients received essential surgical care, reflecting AEPS’s strong commitment to improving access to pediatric surgical services nationwide.

In recognition of these impactful contributions, the Ministry of Health honored the Association with a Certificate of Appreciation and a trophy, acknowledging its dedication and significant role in advancing pediatric surgical care in Ethiopia.
